Born 1983 in Tokyo, Ei spent most of his youth in New York until making his way back to Tokyo in 2006. Working with existing images, his collage technique investigates construction of space and visual perception while engaging a totally new narrative within the image. Utilizing the act of drawing as a tool to encompass the aspect of time, Ei has always maintained a primitive and experimental approach to his art. He prefers to works with simple materials, and the physicality of the finished piece is vital when considering the aesthetic of Ei’s work; the texture, the subtle grooves and the occasional flaws all crucial to the finished piece. The artist himself has described his current practice as “a fossilization of images”.
